The nice thing about SmartThings and other home security devices being compatible with Z wave devices is that it works with hundreds of products, such as smart locks, smart sprinklers, smart garages and so much more. SmartThings is the cream of the crop in home security, especially considering it has no monthly fees. The device is best for those that enjoy a little tinkering around, as it’s not built to be an out of the box system, but rather requires that each device is programmed and set up separately.
Throw in some tamper protection and a built in siren, and you’ve got an entire security system in one convenient package. If you’re not looking to pay a monthly fee for professional monitoring, then abode is a great option that lets you self monitor. Their abode Essentials Starter Kit is pretty minimal, with only a Gateway, a door/ window sensor, a motion sensor, and a key fob plus the abode Cam, which I couldn’t resist adding. Installation is DIY, saving you more money, and abode has pretty good app and customer support ratings. Plus, abode has tons of integrations with Google Assistant, Amazon Echo, Nest, Philips Hue lightbulbs, ecobee, LIFX, Yale, Kwikset, Z wave, First Alert, and IFTTT, so you’ll be able to create home automations galore. Nest Secure is a great option for apartments for a few reasons.

I feel this should be canceled in 30 days as I was told would happen with the first agent I spoke with through my app chat. The supervisor over customer loyalty said I could pay $800 and be good. As a company they are way more expensive than any other monitoring service that can do exactly what they have done. I will never recommend or use vivint again for home monitoring. I have paid faithfully every month for 3 years and I got a wall monitor and a doorbell camera and a few window sensors, they used most of the old sensors that were in my home at install.
